Prophetic Advice for Everyday Life: Three Principles That Shape a Believer

Not every life-changing message comes in a long lecture.
Sometimes, it comes in a few sincere words, given at the right moment, to someone truly seeking guidance.
One day, a companion, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari رضي الله عنه, approached the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asking for advice. He didn’t ask for something complicated—he wanted something practical, something he could live by.
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Have taqwa of Allah wherever you are, follow up a bad deed with a good one and it will erase it, and treat people with good character.” — Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi (1987)
Three short commands—yet they carry the essence of a believer’s life.
1. Taqwa: Awareness Wherever You Are
The first instruction sets the foundation:
“Have taqwa of Allah wherever you are.”
This is not limited to acts of worship or specific times. It is a constant state, being aware that Allah sees you at all times.
One of the companions, Ubayy ibn Ka'b رضي الله عنه, explained taqwa with a powerful image: It is like walking through a path full of thorns, carefully lifting your garments, watching every step so you are not harmed.
This is what taqwa looks like:
Guarding your speech
Being honest even when it’s difficult
Avoiding what displeases Allah, even in private
It is الإسلام in your unseen moments.
2. When You Sin, Don’t Stay There
The second part of the hadith speaks directly to our human nature:
“Follow up a bad deed with a good one—it will erase it.”
Everyone makes mistakes. But Islam teaches us what to do next.
Don’t delay. Don’t despair.
Instead:
Turn back to Allah immediately
Seek forgiveness sincerely
Replace the sin with a good deed
Pray. Give charity. Make dhikr. Say astaghfirullah.
This transforms mistakes into opportunities. A sin does not have to push you away from Allah, it can bring you closer, if it leads to sincere repentance.
3. Good Character Is the True Reflection of Faith
The final instruction completes the picture:
“Treat people with good character.”
Faith is not only internal, it is visible in how you treat others.
Good character includes:
Patience when wronged
Kindness in speech
Forgiveness and humility
Honesty and trustworthiness
The Prophet ﷺ was the best example of this. His character was not occasional—it was consistent.
For many people, your manners are your dawah. They may never hear a lecture—but they will remember how you made them feel.
A Complete Framework for Life
What makes this hadith remarkable is how it covers everything:
Your relationship with Allah → Taqwa
Your relationship with yourself → Repentance and growth
Your relationship with others → Good character
It is simple to remember, yet deep enough to guide a lifetime.
Final Reflection
If you could hold onto just three principles, let them be these:
Be mindful of Allah wherever you are
Never let a sin be the end of your story
Let your character reflect your faith
This is prophetic advice, not just for a moment, but for everyday life.
May Allah grant us true taqwa, accept our repentance, and beautify our character. Ameen.
