Islam is built on a strong and simple foundation that guides every Muslim in their daily life. This foundation is known as the Five Pillars of Islam. These are the essential acts of worship that help a Muslim stay connected to Allah and live a meaningful, disciplined, and peaceful life.

Along with the Five Pillars, Muslims also believe in the Six Articles of Faith, which form the core of Islamic belief.

This guide will help you understand both in a clear and simple way.

The Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars are the basic acts of worship that every Muslim practices.

1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith)

“There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.”

This is the most important belief in Islam. By sincerely declaring this, a person becomes a Muslim.

  • It means we worship only Allah

  • We follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

2. Salah (Daily Prayers)

Muslims pray five times a day:

  • Fajr (dawn)

  • Dhuhr (noon)

  • Asr (afternoon)

  • Maghrib (sunset)

  • Isha (night)

Prayer helps us:

  • Stay connected to Allah

  • Build discipline

  • Find peace and guidance in our daily lives

3. Zakat (Charity)

Zakat is giving a portion of your wealth to those in need.

  • It purifies your wealth

  • Helps the poor and needy

  • Builds compassion in society

It is usually 2.5% of savings if you are able to give.

4. Sawm (Fasting in Ramadan)

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset.

This means:

  • No food or drink during the day

  • Avoiding bad actions and speech

Fasting teaches:

  • Self-control

  • Patience

  • Empathy for those who are less fortunate

5. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah)

Hajj is a journey to Makkah that every Muslim should do once in a lifetime, if they are able.

It teaches:

  • Unity of Muslims around the world

  • Equality (everyone stands the same before Allah)

  • Complete submission to Allah

🌙 The Six Articles of Faith (Iman)

In addition to the Five Pillars, Muslims believe in six core beliefs:

  1. Belief in Allah

    • Allah is One, with no partners

  2. Belief in Angels

    • Created by Allah, they carry out His commands

  3. Belief in the Books of Allah

    • Including the Qur’an, Torah, Psalms, and Gospel (in their original forms)

  4. Belief in the Prophets

    • From Adam to Muhammad ﷺ

  5. Belief in the Day of Judgment

    • Everyone will be held accountable for their actions

  6. Belief in Divine Decree (Qadr)

    • Everything happens by the will and knowledge of Allah

Why This Matters

The Five Pillars guide our actions, while the Six Articles of Faith guide our beliefs.

Together, they help a Muslim:

  • Live a balanced life

  • Stay mindful of Allah

  • Build good character

  • Contribute positively to society
