Islam and Science: Signs to Reflect Upon

Islam does not separate faith from reflection. The Qur’an repeatedly invites us to observe, think, and reflect on the world around us.

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth… are signs for people who reflect.” — Surah Aal-E-Imran 3:190

For a believer, science is not a replacement for faith—it is a means to deepen it.

The Beginning of the Universe (Big Bang)

“Do not the disbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were once a joined entity, then We split them apart…” — Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30

This verse describes a unified origin of the universe.

Scientific Context:

  • The Big Bang Theory was formally developed in the 20th century

  • It states that the universe began from a single, dense point and expanded outward

  • This concept was unknown in the 7th century

Human Embryology

“We created man from a drop… then We made the drop into a clinging form…” — Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:12–14

Scientific Context:

  • Detailed understanding of embryology only became possible with modern microscopes (17th–19th century)

  • The staged development of the embryo is now a well-established scientific fact

The Light of the Moon

“Blessed is He who made… the moon a reflected light.” — Surah Al-Furqan 25:61

Scientific Context:

  • It was later confirmed that the moon does not produce its own light

  • It reflects sunlight, a fact established through

    astronomical observation

Iron Sent Down

“And We sent down iron, wherein is great strength and benefits for mankind…” — Surah Al-Hadid 57:25

Scientific Context:

  • Iron is formed in supernova explosions

  • Much of the iron on Earth originated from outer space

Mountains as Pegs

“Have We not made the earth a resting place, and the mountains as pegs?” — Surah An-Naba 78:6–7

Scientific Context:

  • Mountains have deep roots beneath the surface

  • These help stabilize tectonic plates

Seas That Do Not Mix

“He released the two seas, meeting side by side; between them is a barrier they do not transgress.” — Surah Ar-Rahman 55:19–20

Scientific Context:

  • Oceanography discovered haloclines, boundaries between waters of different salinity

Expansion of the Universe

— Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:47

“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are expanding it.”

Scientific Context:

  • The expansion of the universe was discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1929

  • Galaxies are moving away from each other, showing the universe is not static

  • This is now a fundamental principle in modern cosmology

The Water Cycle

— Surah Ar-Rum 30:48

“It is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds… then He makes them fragments, and you see the rain emerge…”

Scientific Context:

  • The water cycle includes evaporation, condensation, cloud formation, and precipitation

  • This full process was only clearly understood in modern science

  • Earlier civilizations had incomplete or incorrect theories about rain

Alternation of Night and Day

— Surah An-Nur 24:44

“Allah alternates the night and the day…”

Scientific Context:

  • This is caused by the rotation of the Earth on its axis

  • The smooth transition between night and day reflects precise balance

  • This system is essential for life on Earth

The Frontal Lobe (Decision & Behavior)

— Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:15–16

“…a lying, sinful forelock.”

Scientific Context:

  • The frontal lobe (front part of the brain) is responsible for:

    • Decision-making

    • Planning

    • Behavior control

  • Modern neuroscience confirms this region is linked to truthfulness and actions

Deep Sea Darkness and Waves

— Surah An-Nur 24:40

“…darkness within darkness in a deep sea… covered by waves, above which are waves…”

Scientific Context:

  • Deep oceans contain layers of darkness where sunlight cannot reach

  • There are internal waves beneath the surface, only discovered with modern instruments

  • These conditions were unknown before deep-sea exploration technology

Winds as Fertilizers

— Surah Al-Hijr 15:22

“And We send the winds fertilizing…”

Scientific Context:

  • Winds play a role in

    pollination

    of plants

  • They also help in

    cloud formation and rain processes

  • This ecological role is essential for agriculture and life

Protective Atmosphere

— Surah Al-Anbiya 21:32

“And We made the sky a protected ceiling…”

Scientific Context:

  • Earth’s atmosphere protects us from:

    • Harmful radiation

    • Meteors

    • Extreme temperatures

  • Without it, life on Earth would not survive

Everything Created in Pairs

— Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:49

“And of all things We created pairs…”

Scientific Context:

  • Many systems in nature exist in pairs:

    • Male and female

    • Positive and negative charges

    • Matter and antimatter

  • This concept extends beyond just living beings

These signs were revealed over 1,400 years ago…

In a time without telescopes, microscopes, or modern science.

How does an illiterate man in the desert know all of this?

May Allah open our hearts to reflect, understand, and be guided. Ameen.
